One of the things I really like about Mary Kay Andrews's writing is how the southern settings feel nearly like characters themselves, which is why I think I'm so drawn to this writer during the winter months. This book is the sequel to Savannah Blues, and follows the adventures of Bebe Loudermilk, who is the best friend of Eloise "Weezie" Foley, the previous book's protagonist. Both books, and the others in the series take place in Savannah and the surrounding low country and nearby islands. Because I read Andrews books primarily for the warm, relaxed eccentric settings, it reminds me how important setting is in the stories I write. If my readers cannot picture the setting or enjoy imagining themselves there, chances are they won't stick with my writing for long. |
